The Battle of Danziger Bridge: A Novel

"A verbal storm surge." - Edward Journey, Alabama Writers' Forum

"It is a robust fever dream, an astounding and hallucinatory accomplishment." - Edward Journey, Alabama Writers' Forum

An apocalypse patio. The New Orleans Axeman. A housebreaking husband. Mark Essex. Secret Mardi Gras krewes. Hurricane Katrina. Infernal jazz refrains. Lee Circle. Brad Pitt's Make It Right Foundation. The cosmogonic glitterati. The curse of the New Orleans Saints. Homer v. Plessy. General Robert E. Lee. Wounded levees. Ruin porn. Resurrection parade floats. Metaphysical king cake. An antique seaman's chest. An embalmed mule. An officer down. Danziger Bridge.

The Battle of Danziger Bridge presents a collection of interlocking stories set in contemporary New Orleans dealing with dilemmas and questions of local and national urgency. The collection deploys a mix of male and female, black and white narrative voices in humor and pathos, some of whom narrate multiple stories or reappear as characters in other stories, creating a cacophonous effect of conflicting perspectives and values. This overlapping action and character give the collection the cohesiveness of a novel while exploring themes of police brutality, post-Katrina redevelopment, gender relations, trauma, sports superstitions, the legacy of institutional racism, environmental catastrophe, and the alienating effects of technology - all themes relevant to the country's current cultural climate.
