John Pope, a New Orleans reporter since 1973, was a member of The Times-Picayune’s team that won two Pulitzer Prizes in 2006 for coverage of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. He is a contributing writer for The Times-Picayune | The New Orleans Advocate. He compiled Getting Off at Elysian Fields, an anthology of his obituaries and funeral stories, and is a co-author of Building on the Past: Saving Historic New Orleans.

With essays by historic preservation experts and noted journalists, the book also examines how New Orleans' earliest residents incorporated bright hues into their building designs, how historic materials influenced the city's colorful streetscapes, and the modern ways that residents express their personalities through their vibrant homes.
