Martha B. Boone, MD was a surgery and urology resident that trained at Charity Hospital, New Orleans from 1985-1991. She’s one of the first one hundred women board certified in Urology. She retired from the practice of urology after 35 years to write. She was challenged by her mentor to memorialize the hospital in her novels, Mother Charity and The Big Free. She is also the author of the nonfiction book, The Unfettered Urologist.

Mother Charity: A Big Free Novel

Mother Charity, the riveting sequel to The Big Free, follows Dr. Elizabeth Roberts as she navigates the brutal and exhilarating world of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital in New Orleans.

After barely surviving her first six months as a trauma intern at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Dr. Elizabeth Roberts is exhausted from the long hours, senseless violence, and breakneck pace. Despite the tough experience, she has grown to love the city--its food, culture, music, and people. But now she must endure the hardest rotation in the hospital, and it's led by her nemesis, who doesn’t think she belongs in the world of surgery.
